any people, when first
hearing about the Chorus® Motor and Chorus Meshcon technology, have questions about what it is, how it works, and
what it means for the world of electric motors. Whether an expert or an amateur in the field, these pages should
address many of those concerns. If you have a question that is not answered here or elsewhere on our site, please feel free to contact us, or send an e-mail to pr@chorusmotors.gi. About the Chorus Meshcon Technology Q - How do I get a Chorus Meshcon test unit or product in a different size or for a specific application? A - Contact us! If Chorus Meshcon is suitable for what you have in mind, we are happy to work with you and/or your current supplier to make a product which meets your needs. Q - Why isn't Chorus Meshcon offered with the motor and drive separately? A - Chorus Meshcon, like a permanent magnet drive, is the combination of both the motor and the drive electronics. They are mated to each other, and sold as a unit. Q - How can you make such bold claims about the Chorus Meshcon technology? A - The proof is in the pudding. Chorus Meshcon works, and we are happy to demonstrate it to potential customers and licensees in our labs. If you prefer, we can sell you a test unit making it possible for you to test our claims. We welcome your critical evaluation! Q - Is Chorus Meshcon best for small motors or large ones? A - Chorus Meshcon is competitive at applications down to fractional horsepower, including some very high starting torque servo applications. Initial test units are in the 1.5-20 hp frame size. The technology becomes increasingly dominant as the motor size grows, because electronics costs are more significant in very large motors than in very small ones. Q - Is Chorus Meshcon ideal for all motor applications? A - No. Chorus Meshcon is specifically geared for motor applications which require high torque at low speeds without compromising high speed operation and performance. Many applications work well with Chorus Meshcon, but most pump and fan applications (which do not require high torque at low speeds) we recommend our Chorus Star technology. Q - Is there any benefit for non-traction applications? A - Yes - within Chorus Star. Chorus Star itself is beneficial and competitive for virtually all motor applications of 10 hp and above. The specific level of benefit depends on the application requirements. For more details on Chorus Star, please review the Chorus Star FAQ. Q - What is the difference between Chorus® Star and Chorus Meshcon technology? A - Chorus Star is a high phase order motor and drive which has numerous advantages for motors and drives of many types. More specific information can be found in the Chorus Star FAQ and the Chorus Star section of the Chorus Technology page. Chorus Meshcon is a subset of Chorus which is especially superior to conventional technology, and which is for applications which require low-speed overload such as those with start-stop and traction requirements. Q - Does Chorus Meshcon cost more? A - No. Chorus Meshcon is considerably less expensive to mass produce than a 3 phase induction drive with the same performance. It is also far less expensive than any brushless dc (permanent magnet) solutions, because Chorus Meshcon does not require the use of any expensive rare earth materials for magnetization. Q - What about the motor, and other specific components? What makes Chorus less expensive? A - First, Chorus Meshcon is far cheaper for traction applications because we require much less power electronics to do the same job. Power silicon is expensive. Second, there are other cost advantages in using the Chorus high phase order drive approach. Any AC induction frame can be rewound to a Chorus Meshcon configuration. All components used in Chorus Meshcon are available off-the-shelf today - the genius of Chorus Meshcon is that a different configuration of the same components provides far greater benefits. What this means is that the cost of adapting existing induction machines to a Chorus Meshcon approach are minimal. For specific cost factors in addition to the power electronics advantage described above and in the Chorus Meshcon Demo, Chorus high phase order machines have additional cost factors, detailed in the Chorus Star FAQ. Q - Is the advantage for low speed torque limited to what happens in the drive? A - No. Chorus is inherently tolerant of harmonics - including saturation harmonics. This means that not only can the drive produce more output at low speed than that same drive in a 3 phase configuration, but the motor can handle far greater power at low speed and in overload before overheating. Additional details can be found in the Chorus Star FAQ.
